Fatigue Tests

In fatigue tests the fatigue strength, or more precisely the fatigue life and fatigue limit, of materials or components (component S-N test) is determined. Specimens are subjected to cyclic loads, mostly with a sinusoidal force-time function. The load amplitudes and the stress ratio of lower load to upper load are constant.

To determine the values the specimens are tested to several load limits. The S-N test runs until a defined failure (break, tear) occurs or until the specimen has survived a specified number of cycles. Specimens which achieve the threshold number of cycles with no discernible failure are referred to as runouts.

The S-N test is primarily used in the field of machine and automotive construction, but is also employed for material development and quality control in medical engineering and sports equipment manufacture.
